CGB-GA. Jacob MALTBY, b. in Connecticut, ca. Feb. 28, 1782 (Jonathan 4, Sam.3, Sam.2, Wm.1). He died Nov. 2, 1856 at his farm in the town of Van Buren, Onondaga Co., N.Y., ae. 74. m. Sarah (Sally) MINER, date ( ?). She was b. Aug. 19, 1791 in Albany Co., N.Y.; died June 17, 1887, at the home of her son John in the town of Van Buren.

Professor W. W. Clayton's History of Onondaga County has it that Jacob and his brother Chester came to that region about 1797. We now know that the father of Jacob and Chester sold his farm in the town of Salem, Washington County, New York, 1803-4 and bought a farm in Camillus in August of 1804. This fixed the date of arrival of this family in Camillus, as nearly as we have been able to learn.

Miss Lesley E. Voorhees, a long time resident of Baldwinsville, living in Baldwinsville, 1954, has furnished most of the information given here concerning the Maltby-Molby Family in Onondaga County, over the 150 years since the first of them came there.

Jacob Maltby (he seems always to have used this spelling) owned a farm not far from his father's farm in Camillus-Van Buren, and appears to have lived and died on the same farm.

Jacob Maltby's grandson, Thaddeus Haynes Maltby and Chester's grandson, Samuel James Molby related to Fred A Molby, son of Samuel James, 1844, that Jacob had the family Bible and its records of the family, a Coat of Arms, and whatever family relics there were, and that Jacob's widow, Sarah, took them to the home of John Bowman when she married him for her second husband. As related in a newspaper account included herewith, their home on the John Bowman farm burned and the contents were lost, (the fate of many records). (It will be noted later, Jacob Maltby and John Bowman were brothers-in-law, John's first wife having been Matilda Miner, a sister of Sarah (Miner) Maltby). Bowman also was an early settler in Van Buren Town; lived on the Hardscrabble road out of Baldwinsville, now the Van Buren Road.

Jacob Maltby was a soldier in the war with England during his young manhood, and his grave bears a marker as a reminder of this fact.

Jacob's burial place was on the "Rouse Farm." We believe this to have been the Harrison Rouse farm, he that married Harriet Molby, daughter of Chester Molby, and who bought the Chester Molby farm from his heirs. One of Jacob's sons had bodies, among them Jacob's removed from the Rouse farm to the Riverview Cemetery at Baldwinsville, New York.

Sarah Maltby Bowman had 6 children but her daughter, Lucy Maltby Smith, died in 1864 and she reported only her living children. The John Maltby reported here as a laborer, was her son.

John Bowman died Oct. 13, 1869 in the town of Van Buren. After his death Sally lived for a few years with her son Henry in a little house on the proberty of Harrison Rouse. Mr. Harvey Walker has an "Article of Agreement" made the sixth day of March, 1871, between Harrison Rouse and Henry Molby in which Henry agrees to rent a house formerly owned by William Clifton, for sixty five dollars for one year from the first day of April next, with the garden and the hog pasture north of the house. He is also to have all the red cherries he wants in the family. Harrison Rouse agrees to paper the parlor and kitchen. Later Sally went to live with her son John Maltby and remained there until her death.

Baldwinsville Gasette - issue of June 23, 1887.

Obituary. Sally Bowman.

Another ancient landmark has fallen. Mrs. Sally Bowman was born in Rensselaer County in 1791. Early in life she came to this county and for nearly 76 years has lived upon the same farm in Van Buren. She died last Friday morning. She had been a member of the Baptist church for about sixty years. She was not only the oldest member of the Baptist church in this village, but at her death was the eldest person in Van Buren.

Onondaga Gazette - issue of Oct. 28, 1868. Published Wednesdayafternoon.

On Wednesday night the dwelling house of Mr. John Bowman, situate in the town of Van Buren, about two miles south of this village, was entirely destroyed by fire.

(So the fire occurred Wednesday night,Oct.21,1868).

A member of the family said that Lucy Maltby Smith had three children, all of whom died in infancy. Only the name of the one reported p.241 is known. It is also said that Lucy died in childbirth.

   John Bowman, Apr. 17, 1789 - Oct. 13, 1869.
   Matilda, his wife, Sept. 9, 1788 - Nov. 3, 1853.
His wife was Matilda Miner, a sister of Sarah Miner who
married 1st, Jacob Maltby, and 2nd John Bowman.

Henry Maltby, called "Hank" was eccentric, and never very well. He was the one who had his parents' bodies removed from the cemetery on the farm to Baldwinsville, N.Y., cemetery.

Jacob Maltby's wife, Sally Miner, is given as born in Albany Co. in both the 1855 and 1865 Van Buren Censuses. Her obituary gives the place of her brith as Rensselaer Co. One of the towns in Albany County is Rensselaerville formed in 1790, a year before Sally was born, and it is probable that she was born in this town and in the county of Albany.

Onondaga Gasette - issue of Nov. 7, 1856.

Died. At his residence in Van Buren, November 2, 1856, Mr. Jacob Maltby, in the 77th year of his age.

Mr. Maltby was one of the earliest settlers of the town of Camillus (now Van Buren) having moved there in 1800, and has webelieve, always resided on the farm on which he died. Our old inhabitants are fast passing away and the "place that now know them will soon know them no more." (Date 1800 and age are probably wrong).
